Avalon High School student, Arlene Cazares Garcia, was surprised last month with a $50,000 STEM scholarship from Edison International. Each year, only 30 high school students from Southern California are selected for scholarships by the Edison program. Edison International is the parent company of Southern California Edison and one of the largest corporate philanthropic companies.

Latino South Gate High School student awarded $50,000 college scholarship
In order to help students pursue a STEM major at the higher educational level, the Edison Scholarship program was developed to help students from underserved community members, such as diverse ethnic groups, people with disabilities, women, low-income and LGBTQ+ populations.

Every year, 30 outstanding students who live in our service area each received a $50,000 scholarship to help further their education in the STEM fields.
Edison International has awarded more than $15 million in scholarships to 760 students through the Edison Scholars program since 2006.

South LA Robotics program breaks generational barriers for STEM students
It all started in 2019 when Jennifer Lashley, 44, of Gardena, California, founded the South LA Robotics program. Lashley was a coordinator for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) for 17 years before venturing to make her dream come true.
